Rosie the Riviter is a cultural icon of the United States, representing the American women who worked in factories during World War II, many of whom worked in the manufacturing plants that produced munitions and war supplies. These women sometimes took entirely new jobs replacing the male workers who were in the military. The character is considered a feminist icon in the US. {via Wikipedia}

We bid farewell to an unwitting feminist hero thought to be the model for an iconic poster from World War Two. The poster showed a woman in a red bandana, flexing her bicep. It wasn't until the 80s that Geraldine Doyle recognized her face. In 1942, a photographer had come to metal factory where she was working. {via NPR}
